Spirit adding nine routes from Hartsfield-Jackson

Spirit Airlines, the ultra-low cost carrier known for charging for carry-on bags and checked bags, is expanding in Atlanta with nine new routes.

Miramar, Fla.-based Spirit announced Tuesday it will add daily nonstop flights from Atlanta to nine cities this year, more than doubling the number of routes it operates from Hartsfield-Jackson International airport.

Spirit will launch service to Cleveland, Las Vegas and Orlando starting May 7, to Baltimore, Philadelphia and Tampa starting June 18, to Los Angeles starting Aug. 20 and to Boston and Fort Myers starting Sept. 10. Spirit already flies from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale, Detroit, Houston, Atlantic City, Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Ultra-low cost carriers including Spirit and Frontier Airlines have expanded in Atlanta since Southwest Airlines acquired AirTran and shrank its operation here, leaving less competition against dominant Delta Air Lines.
