The Top Five Awards of Excellence recognize economic development organizations that have shown exceptional progress in the area of development. The locations were chosen because of the support system offered to businesses, as well as recent activity and potential growth that can be created in each area. Strategic locations, pro-business climates, investments made in improving infrastructure and the availability of buildings and sites were among the top deciding factors in choosing these locations.

Fulton County’s booming food processing ecosystem generated $382m in agriculture, food, and beverage product exports in 2011. The county is home to more than 283 food processing companies employing more than 22,000 people. The County allows farm-to-truck, truck-to manufacturing facility, and product-to-anywhere in the world capabilities through an extensive logistical network. Additionally, The Food Processing Technology Division at Georgia Tech Research Institute conducts significant research and designs innovative systems for the food processing industry.

In addition to the major food processing businesses and industries, Fulton County has a growing population of urban and organic farmers who are developing food systems to address urban food desserts while creating sustainable economic opportunities. These local farmers are utilizing fresh markets, mobile markets, and a slew of other tools to 1) educate and 2) deliver healthy foods to the community at large.
